Well-documented trends have been reported nationally and internationally of declining interest, poor preparedness, a lack of diverse representation, and low persistence of U.S. and worldwide students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines.  It is imperative that STEM educators respond proactively to the needs for education in STEM and STEM-influenced fields The SDPS 2012 special track on STEM interdisciplinary education tries to discuss different technical and educational approaches to attract K12 and college students to STEM careers.
